Treatment Approaches

In approaching your care, I draw from a number of different nutrition and medical modalities/treatment approaches to help you to get relief, to feel calmer, and to heal. I work in a very individualized manner to get to the root cause of the symptoms or illness that you have, and to optimize your overall health and well-being in the process. I work with the approaches described below in chronic cases with mental, emotional and/or physical distress as I have found them to be very effective and empowering; these modalities aid in restoring optimal function of mind and body and can provide long-lasting relief and cure.

Naturopathic medicine uses customized herbal formulas, nutritional recommendations, dietary supplements, flower essences, hydrotherapy and lifestyle recommendations to support healing and to promote a healthy lifestyle. Naturopathic physicians combine modern medical diagnostic procedures with time-tested natural therapies to stimulate the body and mind’s ability to heal. You can read more about this modality on the “Natural/Holistic Medicine” Page.

Functional Medicine has elements of naturopathic and integrative medicine, but at its core is distinguished by a unique systems-oriented approach (looks at different body systems (Gastrointestinal, Hormonal, etc.)) and works to optimize the health of each of the body’s organs and systems by addressing the root cause(s) or imbalances of one’s ill health. It is an individualized approach to care that prioritizes the therapeutic partnership between doctor and patient.

Homeopathy views symptoms as the result an imbalance in the vital force. Individuals are treated on the basis of how this imbalance manifests within them; not according to what disease they may or may not have. (Thus for ten cases of major depression, there may be 10 different remedies.) Homeopathic remedies stimulate the vital force to enact healing from within. Cure in homeopathy is thus not only the eradication of symptoms, but also a restoration of balance within the individual. A balanced and healthy person possesses mental, emotional, physical and spiritual freedom and thus is able to manifest their unique potential in the world. You can read more about this modality on the “Homeopathy” Page.

Chronotherapy, the treatment and balancing of circadian or biological rhythms (through the use of light therapy, sleep hygiene, low-dose melatonin and other tools) , is important for everyone, but takes on a much more critical role in the treatment of those suffering from mental illness (particularly bipolar). I offer a variety of tools, techniques and treatment options to support stable circadian rhythms and in turn, more stability for those suffering from bipolar disorder, depression and seasonal affective disorder. You can read more about this modality on the “Chronotherapy” Page.

Mind~Body Medicine uses the inherent power of the mind and emotions to effect physical healing. This treatment approach encompasses a wide-range of modalities which often include, but are not limited to: biofeedback, guided imagery, progressive relaxation, hypnosis and meditation.

Homeopathy

Homeopathy speaks of a vital force, which encompasses one’s energy, strength and capacity to heal. Perturbations of the vital force, as a result of stress, trauma and other factors,  appear as symptoms and this is the means by which the disease can be seen and the appropriate remedy determined. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, believed that no illness is wholly mental or wholly physical, but rather every illness involved the organism in its entirety: on mental, emotional and physical levels.

Symptoms are an effect of an imbalance in the vital force and individuals are treated on the basis of how this imbalance manifests within them; not according to what disease they may or may not have. Homeopathic remedies stimulate the vital force to enact healing from within. Cure in homeopathy is thus not only the eradication of symptoms, but also a restoration of balance within the individual. A balanced and healthy person possesses mental, emotional, physical and spiritual freedom and thus is able to manifest their unique potential in the world.

From a homeopathic perspective, mental health disorders are a deeper illness than physical health disorders (they are a greater threat to the health of the vital force). Thus more aggressive and sustained treatments are required to heal. Homeopathy has the potential to offer profound transformation and even cure from mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, panic, obsessive-compulsive disorders and even psychosis, mania and more severe mental illness. As homeopathy views the organism as a single integrated organism, physical healing often accompanies mental and emotional healing.

In my clinical experience, homeopathy works very well alongside other medicines and natural medicines and is safe and highly effective. I use it frequently in concert with dietary changes, supplements, herbs (and pharmaceutical medications, as needed). A wise teacher of mine (Durr Elmore, ND, DC, LAc) said that the key modalities to shift health at a deep and profound level include homeopathy and spiritual practices. Then keeping someone well is the purview of naturopathic approaches (nutrition, herbal medicine, etc.).
